Simple Ways to Avoid Driving Under Influence

Getting charged with Driving under the Influence can have a huge impact on your life. This is not only because it is very embarrassing, a big inconvenience, and can be very expensive, but also because you can go to jail and your future can be damaged.

Even more serious than getting charged is that you could be involved in a fatal accident. Every year thousands of people die in DUI accidents. DUI accidents also cost billions of dollars in property damage each year.

Coming to the realization that Drinking and Driving is not worth the potential trouble, we need to adopt some small but wise changes in life-style in order to avoid Driving under the Influence. The following will allow you to be safe while having fun.

  1. Designate your driver: People tend to ignore simple ways of avoiding DUI. You must designate one person in a group who will stay sober in order to drive you and your friends back home. This way you will be certain to have a sober driver to take you home safely.
  2. Call a Cab: If you are out drinking alone or without a designated driver, you must always call a cab to take you safely to your home. Even if you drove to the bar in your vehicle, it is recommended that you leave your vehicle rather than risk a DUI. It is a good idea to keep the phone number of a cab service with you, or you can ask the bartender for assistance. Alternatively, you can take a cab both ways so that you do not have to worry about your car.
  3. Walk back home: This could be a valid option if you are close to your home and the area that you need to walk is safe as well as well-lit. It is always better if you walk with a friend or group of friends. So if you walk to a nearby bar and then walk back, there are no chances of a DUI.
  4. Stay Overnight: If you are going for a party at one of your friends’ places, it is recommended that you be prepared to stay overnight in case you drink too much.
  5. Own a breath analyzer: Though you must avoid drinking and driving, if you still do so against your better judgment, it is strongly recommended that you purchase your own breath analyzer machine, so that you can make an informed decision.
  6. Exercise caution while drinking: Finally for all those who drink, it is advisable that you drink wisely. Never mix your drinks, eat while you drink, pace your drinking, drink a lot of water in between, and finally, stop drinking at least 2 hours before you plan to drive.
